Most large Woodspirits and tree trunks are finished with
several coats of a clear, premium oil penetrating deck
stain or a spar varnish or urethane so they can live inside
or outside. The best way to take care of them outside is to
make sure they are not directly on the ground so bugs don’t
make them their home and their bottom doesn’t rot. If you
spray them with a clear, oil penetrating deck stain or
something similar every three years or so and keep them in
a shady or covered place out of direct sunlight like a
porch, They will last a very long time. I cut a groove in
the back of these large carvings to release moisture in the
wood. This also relieves pressure and stress in the piece
and reduces further cracking. Please ask if it is an indoor
or outdoor piece.
